There were many new (to me, at least) insights and interpretations relating to the founding fathers and their thoughts and intentions, both during their own time and with an eye towards posterity (that’s us!). "Vivid. The book does move along and it short. The resulting Constitution was a truly revolutionary document. United Kingdom The set up of this book is one section about one founding father followed by a chapter on a contemporary issue and how that history helps us understand. The author argues that American history is an ongoing dialogue which he writes as "then" and "now." It's too easy though to create bedtime story rather than see the complexity of our history and our current moment.Despite being a relative neophyte to the study of American History, particularly the Revolutionary War era, I was quickly and easily swept into Joseph Ellis' investigation into the complexities of the proverbial Founding Fathers - their actual words, their possible intended goals, and their often ironic and contradictory actions. in lieu of what it all means in today's turbulent political landscape. . The award-winning author of Founding Brothers and The Quartet now gives us a deeply insightful examination of the relevance of the views of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and John Adams to some of the most divisive issues in America today. This book does an excellent job of describing the founders and their beliefs on different topics, (Jefferson/race, Adams/economics, Madison/law, Washington/international relations). One would expect, from Pulitzer Prize-winning author Joseph J. Ellis, more history books, but this is only half that. What was especially enlightening to me was the author's discussion of the rise of constitutional 'originalism' and how it has cast a long, dark shadow over the work of the Supreme Court in recent years, especially in regard to Justice Antonin Scalia, the NRA, and the court decision in District of Columbia v. Heller (2008) -- this section was, in a word, chilling...and of very great concern to anyone thoughtfully concerned with the direction of American society. So each of the four founder sections has an essay attached focusing on the key idea as it has affected American history. The Quartet: Orchestrating the Second American Revolution, 1783-1789 I would conclude that if Dr. Ellis feels that federal taxes are too low and should be higher, no one is stopping him from paying a higher amount. Both these books were bestsellers. 7-8)As brilliant a book as I have read in some time! The service requires full cookie support in order to view the website.
