So over the next several afternoons, I lugged an old ice chest to the backyard — simulating a casting platform — coiled off 100 feet of line, and tried to toss the whole damn thing. Despite all that however, it’s now my go-to streamer rod and I’ll carry it rigged and ready as much as I can.
At an affordable price point, the VICE offers fast action and great casting accuracy and control. My fishing buddy has one and is always saying how much he loves it. The VICE is a classically styled, fast-action rod range designed to be accessible to all anglers. For me the rod was fair in close, but I liked it quite a bit more at mid-range and beyond. What I can say is this rod really lived up to expectations. The Redington VICE is one of the best inexpensive rods for fishing in extremely windy conditions or when trying to throw 100 feet on every cast. It appeared to be put together well, looked good, and there was no blank "tick" to be felt when giving the old wiggle/flex test. I picked up the 9wt and can chuck heavy striper flies into the wind with no issues at all. Not really sure about which weight to choose, I settled on the middle option given by most experts.
Our rod was equipped with one stripping guide that had a stainless frame and reliable SiC insert. reel that was filled with a RIO Gold line which weighs 168 grains in the first 30 feet—right at the upper "ideal weight range" of what a 6 weight line should weigh per AFFTA standards.
