I somehow felt that da Vinci would be much more pleased by the analytic and careful way (specifically, his observation on why da Vinci in his personal notebook kept only impersonal details about his loved ones) that Freud treated him, more than he would be pleased by his biographies.

Unheimlich is customarily used, we are told, as the contrary only of the first signification of heimlich, and not of the second. First of all, this book is the one you should read when you want to do what is called as "psychological analysis of literary work". The word has its origins in the German word for hidden or concealed, heimlich, but a secondary meaning of heimlich is “familiar," and so the word contains its near opposite. Explaining uncanny by its synonyms: supernatural, preternatural, weird, mysterious, isn't adequate. Many older freudian motifs return, but the way the writer proceeds from one matter to the next is so slight, impreceptible. Which I wouldn't mind, except that it makes it bloody hard to use for an annotation.Fascinating. I'd say that logically speaking, most of the book is about on par with the following conversation from the 1966 Anyone with even the most basic understanding of logic will probably be bothered by the way Freud draws his conclusions here, particularly in the "celebrated" Da Vinci essay that makes up the bulk of this volume. I. Sandman’s story presents an imaginary plot that involves Nathaniel, Olympia, and the sandman who appears in different names of Coppelius and Coppola. Freud explores the `Uncanny,' the no longer being at home, and traces its dimensions through literature, dreams, and childhood memories. The insights, particularly in reference to the status of "The Uncanny" in the Freudian canon as, odd or, well, uncanny in itself seems worthy of some emphasis and would have been lost on me otherwise.

The uncanny is the psychological experience of something as strangely familiar, rather than simply mysterious.
