It seems after reading about the D4 VVTI engine, our 2004 Toyota Avensis (200km) is possibly experiencing some of the issues discussed in the forum with carbon-build up. Easy to service.You can tell the level of relaibility by the number of questions on this forum = virtually nil.. (of course there are relatively few diesels as well).Apart from needing new disks (salt) and ARB bushes, my 2003 diesel has been faultless. this could be a fuel pump problem ? Valves should be inspected every 40,000km apparently, sadly adjustment is quite involved thanks to the bucket and shim design. Poorly performing injectors have been known to knock loudly, present a poor idle and poor fuel economy.
Toyota 1KD-FTV (or 3.0 D-4D engine) appeared in 2000. Another theory is the noise is coming from the rockers, which when the engine has just started haven’t had the chance to be properly lubricated. During the combustion process, air is compressed and at a very precise moment fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber. The Corolla and Yaris are near-bullet proof cars.
